Viewing Feeds in a Personal RSS Reader

An RSS news reader (AKA feed reader or aggregate reader) allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds and automatically receive syndicated content, such as the latest news headlines, articles and updates, the instant they become available on the web.

Selecting an RSS reader

To subscribe to RSS feeds, you must first select an RSS news reader, available as a browser-based plug-in or as a downloadable stand-alone application. We've listed a few of each here for you to try, though Consultant Technologies do not endorse or support any of these readers.

Browser-based plug-in RSS readers

  • Bloglines Create an account, set up your profile, and then let Bloglines monitor your feeds for updates.
  • NewsGator Create an account and personalise your news channel. Offers several upgrade features.
  • Mozilla Firefox Automatically searches a web page for RSS feeds.

Stand-alone desktop RSS readers

Windows

  • Newz Crawler Retrieves news from various web sources (RSS, Atom, Usenet, web pages) and displays in a number of different views.
  • FeedDemon Part of the NewsGator team.
  • Anasu A free RSS reader that integrates blogs, podcasts, and more.

Mac OS X

  • Newsfire A simple and stylish RSS reader that offers many features for displaying and organising feed content to integrate with the Mac operating system.
  • NetNewsWire The downloadable Mac reader from the NewsGator site.

Open-source

  • Amphetadesk Free, cross-platform aggregator.
  • Straw Free, bare-bones aggregator that works with Python.

If you plan to view video through your RSS feeds, check that your news reader supports video.

Once you've selected your news reader, you need to set it up to subscribe to the RSS feeds you'd like to view, such as the Consultant Technologies news feeds, below.

Getting set up

There are several ways to enter the RSS feed location into your news reader once you've found the RSS feed you would like to subscribe to:

  • right-click the RSS logo link and select "copy shortcut" or "copy link location," then paste the location into the correct field on your news reader.
  • click the RSS logo link to open in a new window. Select and copy the location's URL from the address bar and paste into the correct field on your news reader.
  • drag the RSS logo link into the correct field on your news reader.

Your news reader will now automatically update new content as it becomes available from your selected RSS feeds.

Reading articles

Your news reader will provide you with headlines and short content summaries of the latest articles and updates syndicated by your RSS feeds, as well as links to the full articles that you can follow and read as you choose.
